UAE health authorities announced on the sidelines of the 10th Conference of the Dermatology Division of the Emirates Medical Association, held at the InterContinental Dubai Festival City on Friday, November 6, that the country is poised to become the first in the world to approve an innovative oral treatment for vitiligo. Vitiligo is a skin condition in which the immune system attacks melanocytes, the cells responsible for producing melanin, leaving patches of skin lighter or completely white.
The three-day conference drew more than 500 physicians and dermatology specialists from around the world. Alongside the vitiligo announcement, organisers highlighted several other dermatology breakthroughs, including new psoriasis treatments. Speakers stressed that the UAE ranks among the fastest countries globally in registering new medicines, a pace that gives patients earlier access to innovative therapies than in many other markets.
Until now, standard vitiligo treatment has largely relied on topical creams, light therapy, and, in more severe cases, skin grafting. The approval of an oral medication would give doctors and patients a new, less invasive option. Physicians at the conference said such advances reflect the UAE's broader ambition to position itself as a regional hub for advanced dermatological and cosmetic care.
